BMI Calculator

Enter your height and weight to calculate your body mass index.

What this tool does

Body mass index (BMI) is a simple ratio of weight to height, used as a rough screening indicator for whether a person's weight falls in a typical range. This tool calculates BMI from height and weight in either metric (centimeters and kilograms) or imperial (feet, inches, and pounds) units, updating live as you type, and reports the standard World Health Organization category the result falls into.

Example use case

BMI is commonly checked at doctor's visits, for general fitness tracking, or as a quick screening number before a more detailed health assessment. Switching between metric and imperial units means you can use whichever your bathroom scale and measuring tape are calibrated in without converting by hand first.

BMI has real limitations

BMI doesn't distinguish muscle mass from fat mass, so athletes and very muscular people are often classified as "overweight" despite having low body fat, and it doesn't account for age, sex, or body composition. Treat it as a rough screening number, not a diagnosis — talk to a healthcare provider for an assessment that accounts for your individual body composition.
