Word & Character Counter
Paste or type your text below to get an instant word count, character count, sentence count, and more.
What this tool does
The word and character counter analyzes your text in real time as you type or paste it, right in your browser. It reports the number of words, total characters, characters excluding spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and an estimated reading time based on an average adult reading speed of 200 words per minute. Nothing you enter is sent to a server — all counting happens locally on your device.
Example use case
Writers and students use word counters to hit assignment or submission limits, such as a 500-word essay or a 280-character social media post. Editors use character counts to keep meta descriptions, tweets, or SMS messages within platform limits. Content marketers use the reading-time estimate to gauge how long a blog post will take readers to finish, which helps with pacing and formatting decisions before publishing.
Tips
Paragraphs are detected by blank lines between blocks of text, so separate distinct paragraphs with an empty line for an accurate paragraph count. Sentence counting looks for periods, question marks, and exclamation points, so abbreviations like "e.g." may occasionally be counted as sentence breaks.
